What is The Tomatis® Method?
Why is it that some of us are able to engage in multiple tasks or follow directions at the same time, while other spend so much energy trying to focus on a single thing? Or why some people are able to hear the fine nuances of a new language, while other can’t pronounce the simplest words?
The Tomatis® method involves a set of listening sessions where the brain is stimulated by sounds, progressively helping it to analyse sensory messages and information better.
Why is this important?
Good listening skills forms the basis of effective communication and impacts on our ability to learn from our environment, our ability to achieve success in both and academic and professional setting as well as our relationships with others. Listening is an active process which consists of a number of stages that need to be completed in order to ensure the successful transmission of auditory information. When listening is disrupted it means that the sounds coming into the ear is might be heard correctly, but analaysed incorrectly which impacts how we use and respond to information heard through our ears. The Tomatis® method aims to improve listening skills by working on the three core functions of the ear, namely: balance, hearing and revitalization of the brain’s cortex.

FAQs about Tomatis®
Listening is an active process that involves interpreting auditory information in order to learn from the environment and communicate with others. Sometimes listening can become disrupted due to dysfunction of muscles found in the middle ear which impacts the transmission of auditory information to the inner ear and brain. This results in a distorted auditory message which impacts interpretation of information and effective use thereof. The Electronic Ear is a device used with the Tomatis Method® which exercises the middle ear muscles in order to facilitate accurate transmission of sound and focusing the brains attention to auditory information which effectively trains the brain in how to listen.
The listening device is booked for 13 days in which the programme is completed at home. On the first day of renting the device, a pre-listening test is conducted in order to establish baseline results for comparison. At home, the individual listens to a two hour music programme for 13 consecutive days. A post-listening test is conducted one month after the completion of the 13 program in order to compare findings and establish improvements made during the programme.
13 days are recommended. The need for additional Tomatis sessions is determined based on findings of the post listening test. Improvements made with the Tomatis® method are durable and in many instances, it is not necessary to do additional sessions beyond the initial programme. However, in some cases it might be advisable to do additional sessions in order to address difficulties most effectively.
