The human brain has an “internal clock” that regulates timing in the brain. Timing in the brain (called temporal processing) is important in regulating a number of neurological processes necessary for learning and development.
Our ability to focus and process information efficiently and accurately is all a matter of timing.
Interactive Metronome (IM) is a non-invasive, computer based therapy programme that uses cognitive activities combined with physical exercises to improve timing in the brain. IM therapy impacts a wide variety of skill areas namely: visual processing, gross and fine motor abilities, cognition, linguistics, as well as social and behavioural abilities.
IM devices for home use
The ADD Lab also offers the option of completing IM training at home through the use of an IM Home Device. A training plan is developed to address specific concerns and progress is then monitored via the internet.
What can the Interactive Metronome improve:
- Processing of information
- Speed and accuracy
- Executive function

FAQs about Interactive Metronome
During IM sessions, the trainee (client) wears headphones and listens to an audio guidance system which consists of a metronome beat and guidance sounds. The aim of training is for the trainee to use the auditory guide sounds and/or visual aids to match the metronome beat as closely as possible while performing a range a different physical activities.
After your first consultation at The ADD Lab, a pretest assessment is conducted after which a customised training programme is designed to be followed. Thereafter, the client will need to come in to the lab for between 12 – 15 sessions of training depending on the needs of the client, or an IM Home Device can be arranged where the client can complete the programme in the comfort of their own home. Thereafter a post-test assessment is conducted to compare results and see progress made.
Sessions range from between 30 to 45 minutes.
Interactive Metronome recommends 12 – 15 sessions for most effective results.
Nothing is required to prepare for IM sessions but a good night’s rest is advisable.
